As 2012 rolls in with its promise of new and exciting things, let us bid farewell to a remarkable 2011 that saw our show grow in size and stature across loads of fronts. It was a remarkable year for poetry, prose and spoken word performance at the brownbread mixtape. Once again we were proud to showcase many of the incredibly talented writers and performers based in Ireland. Live poetry and prose can be a tricky thing to convince others about, but time and again we heard from audience members how much they loved the spoken word performers at our shows. 2. High John - Raven

Raven hails originally from California but has been a Dublin local for some time now. In addition to being a well-known powerhouse poet, he co-runs the highly regarded Tongue Box poetry session every month in The Cobblestone. His poems are highly crafted pieces, expertly delivered.

3. Raphymn - Karl Parkinson

Karl has a real shamanic spirit, as he channels his own life experiences with his love for rhythm and rhyme that harkens to modern day hip-hop performers like Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg. His poems are chronicles or the everyday and the extraordinary . This recording is from a studio session for an album to accompany the Culture Ireland Irish poetry showcase at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in New York City where Karl performed along with Kalle Ryan, Sarah Maria Griffin, Stephen James Smith and Dave Lordan.

4. Hymn To The Reckless - Erin Fornoff

Erin is a poet from the mountains of North Carolina who, luckily for us, lives in Ireland now. Her emotionally resonant, lyrically deft poems have been a smash hit at our shows. Erin knocked us out with her poems at our Electric Picnic show, as well as our showcase at Mindfield in Merrion Square earlier this year, but this performance of her masterful poem “Hymn To The Reckless” from our March gig is a barnstormer. It’s hard to believe she has only been performing her own material for about a year. Already one of the best y’all.

5. Crash - Sarah Maria Griffin

Sarah’s poetry has wonderful whirling blends of tenderness, electricity, fight and foolhardiness. Her future is limitless, her ideas are clearly brimming and the coming years will surely see her grow in stature as a writer. Earlier this year she published her first collection of poems entitled “Follies” which was extremely well received. This session was recorded for the same aforementioned Culture Ireland showcase CD and captures one of Sarah’s typically confessional and captivating poems.

6. Manhattan - Kalle Ryan

As MC of the brownbread mixtape, I don’t always get a chance to perform my poems and certainly not the more “serious” ones. This was a poem that I have held dear to my heart and it has been written and rewritten several times since my experience of September 11th 2001. I was really proud to be able to perform it in my second home of New York City in April of this year on an emotional night at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe.

7. The Death of the Dollar – Abby Oliveira

Abby is, quite simply, a hypnotic presence on stage. It is n surprise she has wowed audiences around the globe with her mesmerising poems and performances. She often performs as part of The Poetry Chicks on the festival circuit, but on this occasion we were treated to a special solo performance. Poems that pack power, politics, passion and poesy all in one.

8. The Lake Isle of Innisfree – Smith & Reilly

Stephen James Smith is a great performance poet. Enda Reilly is a great singer and songwriter. Together they are electrifying. Stephen and Enda have recently embarked on a project to record original works, as well as classic Irish poems in a genre they call spoken word sung verse. There is nothing quite like it currently being performed. The marriage of the lilting musical song with the potent poetic delivery makes for a unique experience. In this performance from our show at the Imagine Festival in Waterford, you will hear W.B. Yeats exquisite poem in a way unlike any before. Their album “Arise and Go” is available on iTunes and select record shops nationwide. Buy it. It’s great.

9. Hair Loss and Baldness – Fergus Costello

Fergus is the current Munster Slam Champion. He is also a dead ringer for Yul Brynner. In addition he is a hysterically funny and multi-talented performer. A buzzing dynamo of energy and ideas, Fergus is one of our favourite poets and favourite people. He orbits planets you and I could only dream of.

10. Will You Tell Her? – Fabian Montes

Every month, magical things happen at the brownbread mixtape, but every now and again spectacularly mystical things happen like this. Fabian Montes, an LA based poet and former gang member, was in attendance at our Twisted Pepper show and we were lucky enough to entice him to the stage to speak about his remarkable life’s journey and to hear a reading of one of his poems. A slice of a life and a world that was a real honour to hear. Our thanks to him for sharing and best wishes to him in his important work with Homeboy Industries.

11.Cheek, Cheek, Chin and Nose – Colm Keegan

As the year began with a magnetic performance by Colm Keegan, it seems fitting that we closed it with another. This performance of a truly remarkable poem is the best we have ever seen Colm. The room was stunned into silence and hung on every word. Rightly so.

It really was an exceptional year for poetry and spoken word, with some of the strongest, most powerful performances we have seen yet. Please check out our YouTube channel for loads of other brilliant spoken word performances from this year and last year at the brownbread mixtape. On a personal note, it was a very special year as myself (Kalle Ryan) and former brownbread mixtape performers Stephen James Smith and Colm Keegan wrote and performed an ABSOLUT Fringe spoken word show entitled “Three Men Talking About Things They Kinda Know About”. The show, directed by Sarah Brennan, played to a week fo full houses and rave reviews (including a 4 star review in The Irish Times), culminating in an award nomination in the category of “Bewley’s Café Theatre ‘Little Gem’ Award”. It was a huge triumph for us as poets &  friends and we believe that it took the Irish performance poetry scene to a new audience and in a new hopeful direction. 1. Werner Herzog : Skanger Man (Studio Version)

Of all the sketches we have ever written and performed, this one has consistently received the most wildly positive reaction. Funnily enough, we weren’t sure if it would even make the cut at the January 2011 show where it debuted, as it felt far too esoteric for an audience to latch on to. Surely noone would know or care enough about Werner Herzog to enjoy a spoof documentary by him about a Dublin skanger? But we underestimated our smart and savvy audience, as they roared in appreciation and stuck with it from start to finish. Since then we have performed the sketch to hugely appreciative audiences at the Flat Lake Festival, Imagine Arts Festival and Electric Picnic. The original live sketch, which can be seen here, has already racked up over 800 views on YouTube, but since then we have recorded a studio version with Enda Roche on production duties and it trumps even the original. We are hugely proud of it, like a secret fart.

2. Celebrity Knacker Drinking

Beautifully filmed by Tom and Andy of Storymap (check their fascinating website out here), this sketch was loads of fun to perform as we took the simple premise of these three unlikely celebrities going on the lash with each other in Dublin. Mostly it gave Ken a good excuse to get Kalle to do his hammy Arnold Schwarzenegger accent and for Gus to look the part as a floppy haired Jim Morrison.

3. Newsnight : General Election Special

This year saw a general election at last, so we eagerly took a potshot at the scoundrels in power, as well as the many pontificating politicians looking to take their place. Much of the humour is time and context specific, but hopefully it still stands up as a funny document of the end of the Fianna Failure era and the ushering in of the next wave of bullshit.

4. The Twitter Sketch

Every now and again we hit upon a sketch that amuses us a ridiculous amount and ultimately has no right to work in a live setting (See last year’s Actual Conversation on YouTube). The Twitter sketch is exactly one of those sketches, made all the better thanks to the superb live saxophone accompaniment by Roger Gregg, as well as the remarkable source material from Charlie Sheen, Kanye West and Jedward. Insane 140 character haikus set to jazz.

5. America’s Next Top Model

Tyra(nt) Banks unleashes her venom on three unwitting, witless wannabe models named Kimberly, Mikado and Coconut Cream. Spot on observations about the show coupled with the loopy challenges made this sketch a massive hit with our audience. Plus we all learned how to “sm-ize” (smile with your eyes!)

6. Irish Presidential Election – Newsnight Special Report

Following the success of our general election sketch, we felt it was only fair to take a potshot at the gallery of gobshites running for the office of President. We had buckets of fun performing this one and it went over really well on the night of the gig, but one YouTube commenter described it as “crappy predictable rubbish…(and) a couple of cheap laughs” . Must be a Sean Gallagher supporter.

7. Pope Palpatine

1. Marc O’Reilly

Marc O’Reilly is an exceptionally gifted guitar player and singer based in County Waterford. Without a shadow of a doubt, he is the real deal. As you sit mesmerised watching his fingers dance on the fretboard, you are silently drawn in by his bluesy, boozy voice. His debut album “My Friend Marx”, released last year, is a terrific piece of work, but it is in a live setting that Marc truly astonishes. His star is clearly in the ascendant and that should come as no surprise to anyone who has seen him perform. Find out where he is playing next and go there. You can thank us later.

2. Fia Rua

Fia Rua is a genuine troubadour and he sings terrific songs that are a blend of folk, punk and trad that he makes completely his own. With a voice that sounds steeped in centuries of experience, he bends wise words around magical melodies. His recent album “Falling Time” is a brilliant snapshot of modern Ireland and we heartily recommend picking it up, but it is in a live setting that Fia Rua truly excels. 3. Lindsey Ryan Horne

We were extremely lucky to have the critically acclaimed North Carolina songstress perform songs from her upcoming album at our first show of the year. 4. Harry Bird and the Rubber Wellies

Travelling folksters Harry Bird and the Rubber Wellies wowed us with their warm spirit and their intimate cabaret of joyful sing-a-long choruses and general participatory fun. Based in Bilbao, Dublin and Groningen they spent the last three years touring Ireland, the UK and mainland Europe playing bars, cafes, theatres, circus galas, festivals and even punk clubs! Their debut album Long Way to Be Free, a home grown collection of songs exploring love, faith and displacement in a world of contradictions, is an absolute joy and comes highly recommended!

5. Pearse McGloughlin

Our old friend Pearse McGloughlin joined the brownbread mixtape at our monumental Electric Picnic show, which, by his own admission, was his best ever gig. A tent filled with 200+ people roared in appreciation to his masterful songs and he closed out his set with this terrific rendition of his song “Ag Ól Ag Ól Ag An Garbhóg”. He was ably assisted by co-songwriter Enda Reilly, as well as percussive accompaniment from Fia Rua and our very own Enda Roche.  A wonderful moment from a wonderful gig.

6. Robotnik

The eclectic, eccentric, excellent Robotnik played an absolutely unforgettable set at the brownbread mixtape, with a performance that incorporated delicate a capella songs, grandiose electronica and a unique rendition of the “Pat the Baker” jingle. Robotnik made a huge impression on both the audience and us, resulting in a regular slot for The Brownbread Players’ sketches on his 2XM radio show “Robotnik’s Random Rampage”. His second album is currently int he works and we eagerly await it. So should you.

7. Andy Delamere

8. Crazy Dog Audio Theatre

Crazy Dog Audio Theatre is the brainchild of writer/performer/musician and all round renaissance-man Roger Gregg. We were thrilled to have Roger and his raggle taggle troupe at our show as they delivered a vaudevillian array of songs and poems in superb fashion, ranging from Weimar style cabaret songs to contemporary comic poems. Roger is also the driving force behind the Bee Loud Glade Cabaret sessions, where contemporary Irish poems are set to original musical compositions. It is a fantastic night of entertainment, so make sure you catch it. Their next show promises to be their greatest yet.

9. Niall James Holohan

Niall is the charismatic lead singer of Reader’s Wives and we were treated to a rare solo acoustic performance. 10. Justin Grounds

Justin is a wildly gifted violin player and when you add his songwriting capabilities to the mix, as well as his ability to innovate and layer using pedals, loops and electronic knowhow, you have a really unique, exciting artist. The current inimitable, impossibly brilliant incarnation of The Guilty Folk grew out of a chance reuniting of old friends at a very early brownbread mixtape. Since then they have gone on to become one of the funniest, bawdiest, boldest and most harmonious songwriting folkers. As rude as they are revelatory, they are a comedic and musical force to be reckoned with. 2012 promises to be their year. We love them. You should too.

It’s nearly Christmas, so we wanted to open this present a little early with you! Over the years, we have amassed hours of incredible live footage of the very best contemporary Irish music, poetry and comedy at the brownbread mixtape. Early on in our existence we put out a compilation of the Best of the Batch (which you can download for free here) but we decided we wanted to put together a more regular podcast showcasing the amazing material we have recorded since then.

Below is a short trailer type thing that we put together as part of a radio broadcast submission to whet your appetite. The actual podcast will probably have a different format but there should be enough in here to give you a sense of what delights to expect.
