3 poems by 3 poets in 1 studio

Last month a number of Ireland’s leading performance poets headed off to New York to perform at the legendary Nuyorican Poets Cafe courtesy of Culture Ireland. [Read a great Irish Times article about it by Davin O’Dwyer here ]

To mark the occasion, several of the poets recorded a CD entitled “The Rising Irish” in Enda Roche’s studio in Leixlip and below are some videos of the recording session. A lovely variety of voices and ideas. Mmmm poetry.

raphymn by karl parkinson

Karl Parkinson was born and lives in the inner city of Dublin. He has had poems published in a variety of publications, as well as performing at several major festivals and literary nights around the country. He has always been a hugely popular performer at the brownbread mixtape and this studio recording of his poem ‘raphymn’ captures him at his rhythmic, rhapsodic best.

crash by sarah maria griffin

Sarah Maria Griffin is 22 years old and hails from the north side suburbs of Dublin. She is presently completing her M.A in Writing in NUIG. She recently had her first collection of poems, “Follies”, published by Lapwing Press and has drawn strong praise from critics and peers alike. She  has only been performing in spoken word circles since late 2009, but since then she has performed at many of the most notable literary events around the country. Sarah is a vivacious and spirited new poetic voice and this poem is a terrific snapshot of her inimitable style. She can be seen at this month’s brownbread mixtape on May 25th.

Kalle’s plays and poetry have been published in New York City and Utah and he penned the brilliant song “My Blood is Boiling for Ireland”, the Irish Times alternative national anthem competition winner. In the past year he has performed his poems at notable literary festivals such as the Dublin Writer’s Festival, Electric Picnic, Imagine Festival and the Flat Lake Festival. This powerful poem, written in New York, bears all of Kalle’s trademark intensity and honesty throughout.
