Join us on Wed, Nov 28th at 8.30pm upstairs in the Stag’s Head for our eclectic monthly spoken word, music and comedy show. [Facebook event type thingy here] It is our final show of the year and our theme of the night is “The Man”. As always, the acts will tailor part of their performance to the theme of the night. Resident MC Kalle Ryan will be in place to keep the spirits high and the energy up, while resident sound man and sidekick Enda Roche will deliver the deadly decibels. And for the first time ever, the musical acts on the night will be curated by someone other than ourselves. Alexis Vokos, who runs the brilliant independent Delphi Label (home to We Cut Corners and Le Galaxie amongst others), has hand picked some truly outstanding musical acts for the show (see below). For an absolute bargain of 5 EURO you will get to hear some of the very best musicians working in Ireland today and, in addition, we have lined up the current Munster Slam Poetry Champion to perform on the bill too! And, as if that wasn’t enough, our resident sketch comedy troupe will have some fresh, new radio style sketches on the theme of the night for your pleasure. Plus you will receive a delicious complimentary rum based beverage in return for walking in the door and parting with that fiver. Amazing!
Pay on the door. No advance sales. Guaranteed fun times. Spread the word!
The following brilliant performers will be on the lineup:
Deaf Joe writes folk songs, sometimes romantic, sometimes dreamlike, always cathartic. He is constantly writing and performing and also writes scores for contemporary dance and theatre productions. He plays live with Katie Kim from time to time. To date he has released the ‘Forest Fires EP’ (Oct ’09, limited edition), the ‘Winter’s Glow EP’ (Oct ’10) and ‘The Holy Water EP’ (Mar ’11). Joe’s debut album ‘Burrowings’ was released to great critical acclaim in February of this year. We are delighted to welcome Joe back to the stage with us. Every time he plays we feel like we are allowed to share in a special secret. Get ready to hear a songwriter at the peak of his powers.
“Joe emerges pearl-like from his shell. Sublime songs and divine inspiration; a potent mix.” – Donal Dineen
Jennifer was born in Washington DC to an Irish/American mother and a Puerto Rican father but the family moved to Ireland when Jennifer was 3 and she’s been living here since. After picking up the guitar at age 11 and composing songs from the age of 13, Jennifer played in various groups through her teenage years and early twenties and the styles of each ranged from hard rock to minimalist folk. Ardent emotional experiences and daunting but lush perceptions of being feed the debut EP, Salient Point, which was recorded and mixed by Stellarsounds’ Steven Lynch. Evans’ vocals are soulful and lyrically unique in origin. The music on this recording is alternative in genre but also finds it’s roots in Jazz, Dark Folk and Blues. With an album’s worth of new material up her sleeve Jennifer’s latest shows can range from dark folk to a sneaky style of Dub depending on what’s right for the occasion and how long the set is! Empirical knowledge, exoticism, a questioning of identity and home…..whether solo, accompanied or playing with the full band the music’s target is up your spine.
“Beautifully spooked noir-folk from the Dublin singer and her band The Ripe Intent. Way To Go is a tune fans of Joanna Newsom, Evie Sands and Linda Perhacs will be raving about.” – Jim Carroll, Irish Times
In June 2012, Ross was the winner of Ireland’s best unsigned singer-songwriter competition, as held by the Tom Dunne Show on Newstalk 106 FM. His song Monet was chosen by a judging panel as the best entry from over a thousand submissions.Ross is a graduate of the Ballyfermot Rock School and the Kildare‐born songwriter has consistently impressed on the live stage, earning countless invitations as a special guest with the likes of Bell x1, Sinead O’ Connor, Declan O’ Rourke, Damien Dempsey and Oscar‐winner Glen Hansard. As well as completing a successful east‐coast tour of the U.S. in late 2011, Ross Breen has built up a large following performing with his band at a number of Ireland’s premier festivals, including Electric Picnic, Indiependence, Vantastival, Knockanstockan, No Place Like Dome and Hard Working Class Heroes. Ross is always a knockout and it is great to have him back so soon again.
“… fresh, inventive and daring… The Irish music scene’s best kept secret? Maybe it’s time more people were told″ – Drop-d.ie
The reigning Munster Slam Poetry champion and livewire lyricist, Fergus Costello, returns to the brownbread mixtape. Fergus has a unique style that mixes the deepest thought with the highest farce, the most profound politics with the lightest touch. He is a one-man dynamo that has to be seen to be believed and no single performance is ever the same. Fergus orbits planets that you and I could only dream of. And if we are really lucky he might also grace us with a tune on his legendary Joe Foley Mandola. Prepare yourselves for a firecracker of a performance from one of our all-time favourite acts.
The Brownbread Players
One of the most enjoyable parts of the monthly brownbread mixtape show are the original sketches written and performed by our very own Brownbread Players sketch troupe. The troupe is made up of professional actors Gus McDonagh, Niall McDonagh, Eva Bartley and Sean McDonagh, as well as our own chancer Kalle Ryan . All of the sketches are performed in the style of a live radio comedy show (akin to the classic Goon Show), complete with bloopers, giggles and audience interaction. They are consistently hilarious and are often the most popular element of our show. They are absurd, silly, satirical and a super-rapid-deadly-buzz!
the brownbread mixtape is a free monthly live comedy, poetry & music show in Dublin, Ireland.
Each show has a theme. Each act does a performance based on the theme. We all have loads of fun. Simple as that.
