VideoTitleGenericBBMT

This month’s brownbread mixtape show was really special – some truly remarkable performances mixed with that indescribable special magic that happens in that room. BBC Radio Ulster were down to record the show for a spoken word documentary for one of their programmes, so we cut together some cool performances from the night to share with them. And so we wanted to share them with you too. So, without further ado, here are a selection of some of the most special moments in a night filled with dozens of them. And if you like what you hear, post them to your Facebook, your Twitter, your Google+ and elsewhere. It helps the artists, it helps the community and it makes everything cooler. Enjoy!

What a huge honour. In today’s Irish Times, the brownbread mixtape has been named in an inspiring list of creative people here in Ireland. Every single person or group on the list pushes things forward artistically and creatively in this country, so we are truly proud to be named among them. We believe strongly in the power of live performance and art to unite and inspire. All of these people are heroes. Support them all and there is no doubt this country will continue to grow in the right direction. Respect to one and all.

We won the Electric Picnic again!

We had an absolute blast at Electric Picnic again this year. Our thanks to Marty Mulligan for including us on The Word stage in Mindfield. Our sincere thanks to the many hundreds of you who came out to catch our shows on Saturday and Sunday. And, of course, our profound love and gratitude to the incredible performers who graced our shows. The weekend wasn’t without it’s hiccups but we are incredibly proud of the two kickass shows we put on. Saturday saw us open with a rousing, raucous rendition of Bon Jovi’s Living on a Prayer , followed by mesmerising rhymes from John Cummins, hysterical sketches from The Brownbread Players and a sweet superstar set of music from the trio of Pearse McGloughlin, Sweeney Lee and Fia Rua. We closed it out with a suitably savage singsong version of Kalle’s alternative Irish national anthem ‘My Blood is Boiling for Ireland’ . Sunday saw us open the show with a boisterous version of Ole, Ole, Ole and segue sweetly into the superb songs of EleventyFour (fresh from her barnstorming set at the Body & Soul Main Stage), sharply followed by further funny sketches from The Brownbread Players, and closing out proceedings was the deft and daft touch of Fergus Costello and his Joe Foley Mandola. As the final refrain of the alternative anthem rung around the tent, we smiled to see an ocean of happy camping festival goers who had shared in a truly wonderful experience with us. We look forward to doing it all over again next year! Our regular show in The Stags Head returns on Wednesday Sept 26th, so stay tuned for that! Our podcast is still going strong and available on iTunes or from this very blog (XML feed at top of the menu on right hand side). Stay connected, stay in touch and stay happy. See you all soon!

The Brownbread Players and “My Blood is Boiling for Ireland” on RTE Radio 1 last night!

Image

Last night on a Nighthawks curated Arena show on RTE Radio 1, our wonderful Brownbread Players performed their hilarious sketch “How to speak like a culchie”. Chief culchie and ringleader Kalle Ryan then belted out a rousing rendition of the alternative national anthem “My Blood is Boiling for Ireland” to the nation. It was an absolute blast to be a part of and our thanks go out to Arena, Nighthawks and RTE.

You can listen back to the show at the link below for one day only (April 5th) by clicking on the latest show. Our performance is at the very end of the show around the 54 minute mark. Have a listen to the whole show to catch performances by past brownbread mixtape performers like Erin Fornoff, Karl Parkinson, as well as great music by Little X’s For Eyes and The Gandhis.
