The following brilliant performers will be on the lineup:

MUSIC :

Fiach

Fiach Moriarty is a 27 year old Dubliner, well respected and loved for his beautiful songwriting, exceptional voice and fantastic guitar playing. Fiach has, until now, been one the Irish music scene’s best kept secrets but with the recent release of his debut album “So I” he has been catapulted into the hearts of music lovers up the length and breadth of the country. Described in Hot Press as a “supreme performer’’, he has shared the stage with the cream of Irish artists such as Damien Dempsey, Kila, Finbar Furey, Sinéad O’Connor, Damien Rice, BellX1 and Mary Black.the brownbread mixtape is truly delighted to welcome Fiach back to perform with us. You can all say you saw him way back when in The Stag’s Head…

So I is a debut album of depth and courage, guile and wit‘ – Irish Times

Leanne Harte

Leanne Harte is an artist, musician, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist because its in her blood. She started singing and playing acoustic guitar at the early age of eight and by eleven had penned and studio demoed her first ten original songs, which received radio airplay in Ireland. At sixteen Leanne signed a management and independent record deal, formed her first band, and recorded her critically acclaimed debut EP Eradication. The EP sold over 3,000 copies and received rave reviews across the board gaining favourable press, national radio play and live appearances on top European TV shows. She went on to record her eponymous debut album with legendary rock producer Chris Tsangarides (Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Joan Armatrading ), which received stunning reviews. Last year she released a live acoustic album entitled “An Irish Girl in Paris” recorded At Café De la Danse in Paris. the brownbread mixtape is delighted to invite such a formidable musical talent to the stage. Get ready for goodness.

Ailbhe McDonagh

Irish cellist, Ailbhe McDonagh, performs throughout Ireland and internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY, and the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin, Ireland, where she studied with several world-renowned cellists. Over the last ten years, she has performed throughout Europe, Asia and the USA and has appeared as a concerto soloist numerous times all over Ireland. Performances include concerts for the Irish President at Aras an Uachtarain, the Yale Norfolk Festival, Schleswig Holstein Music Festival, Great Irish Houses Festival, Carnegie Hall and Irish national television and radio. She has recently formed a new duo, “The McDonagh Sisters” with pianist Orla McDonagh. Keenly interested in contemporary music, McDonagh collaborates with several composers and other artists worldwide, most recently recording a CD of contemporary music for Bridge Records in New York. She also enjoys surfing. the brownbread mixtape is truly thrilled to bring this world class musician to the confines of The Stag’s Head bar. It promises to be a really special night.

I have heard several performances of this piece (Beethoven A major sonata) over the past 30 years or so, some of them by famous cellists; but this one, by a cellist in her early 20s, was the most musically complete and satisfying.” – The Irish Times

SPOKEN WORD:

Fintan O’Higgins

Fintan is a poet and patriot. He has written extensively for stage and television. His poetry, translations (from Irish and Latin) and essays have appeared in numerous print and online journals internationally, including The Stinging Fly, the Birmingham Poetry Review and the Columbia Journal. He is fucking cool. the brownbread mixtape is delighted to welcome this literary luminary to our stage.

SKETCH COMEDY:

The Brownbread Players

One of the most enjoyable parts of the monthly brownbread mixtape show are the original sketches written and performed by our very own Brownbread Players sketch troupe. The troupe is made up of professional actors Gus McDonagh, Eva Bartley and Sean McDonagh, as well as our own chancer Kalle Ryan . All of the sketches are performed in the style of a live radio comedy show (akin to the classic Goon Show), complete with bloopers, giggles and audience interaction. They are consistently hilarious and are often the most popular element of our show. They are absurd, silly, satirical and a super-rapid-deadly-buzz!

OTHER COOL STUFF

Barring any technical hitches, we will be broadcasting LIVE ON D’INTERNET here

We will be having our monthly RAFFLE with highy desirable and coveted prizes

And you can expect lots of surprises and silliness

It would be a pleasure to see you all there!

Best of 2010 – Music

It has truly been an incredible year for the brownbread mixtape, with the show going from strength to strength every month. By the end of the year we were drawing crowds of 100+ at every gig (with people spilling in to the hall and down the stairs) and each show has been buzzing with incredible magic and energy. The source of much of that buzz and electricity has been provided by the amazing musical acts at the brownbread mixtape.

It really feels as if we are going through a new golden age in music in Ireland and all of the acts who are listed below are at the heart of that. We are spoiled by the incredible calibre of acts here right now and we are always floored by the warmth and integrity of all of the performers who come to play at our show. They have been extremely supportive of the night and we are most grateful to them all. This generation of musicians are still among the best kept secrets around in Ireland, but not for much longer.

So please click away below. Take the time to listen and enjoy the music. Then support them and spread the word, post the links, update your status; so others can hear them and share in that joy too.

So, without further ado, in no particular order, these are the very best musical acts of 2010 at the brownbread mixtape…

1. Pearse McGloughlin

Pearse is one of the very best songwriters in Ireland right now and we were thrilled to have him perform with us on more than one occasion at the brownbread mixtape. This rendition of his song “Morning Mist” was recorded during his terrific set at the Imagine Arts Festival in Waterford back in October. It is a song that defies you to not want to sing its catchy chorus of “For the birds, the brids, the birds…” (So much so that Kalle included it in his poem “The Reformartists”.) Pearse released a great EP this year entitled “Twine” (hear the title track live at BBMT here), which featured our very own Enda Roche on percussion and it is currently available on iTunes and Bandcamp. Do yourself a favour and get it. It’s a gem. 2011 promises much for the Sligo native and we hope to see him soon again on the brownbread stage. [For more info: www.walkperson.net]

————————————————————————————————————————–

2. Enda Reilly

As well as being one of the coolest dudes with the most enviable beard since ZZ Top, Enda Reilly is also a top class guitarist and songwriter. He is a guaranteed crowd pleaser every time he has played the brownbread mixtape. This performance of “Henry” from his October appearance showcases his trademark crafted lyrics, deft guitar playing and his rusty honey vocal cords. (On the same night he performed a storming cover version of The Stone Roses classic “Waterfall”). Keep an eye out for his upcoming EP of songs and poetry that he is releasing with poet Stephen James Smith. It promises to be something very special indeed. Basically what we are saying is Enda Reilly is a ledgebag. [For more info: www.endareilly.com]

————————————————————————————————————————–

3. Elder Roche

Elder is a sparkling lyricist and marvellous performer. His debut album “Nobody Knows” is a record filled with evocative songs and when he performs them live they are given another atmospheric twist again. This recording of his song “Time Will Tell” is taken from his performance at our show in Downes Bar as part of the Imagine Arts Festival. Elder is a troubadour at the height of his considerable powers. Make it your goal to hear him live as soon as possible. [For more info: www.elderroche.com]

————————————————————————————————————————–

4. Herm

Herm played a cracking set at our “Love Stinks” themed show back in June. Of the many fantastic songs that night (including an emotional rendition of ‘Sad Song’ by the late Clancy] their performance of the current single “Rearrange” particularly stood out. A great example of songwriter Kevin Connolly’s quirky lyrics and mighty ear for a melody [For more info: www.herm.tv]

————————————————————————————————————————–

5. Blood Red Mountain Band

The Blood Red Mountain Band play blisteringly fun, good old timey music with a decidedly Dublin twist. At any given time there can be up to 10 people onstage, but on the night they played with us it was just three (Mark, Joeby and Liza). The band had the room absolutely stomping along from the get-go with this rowdy cover of “Ophelia” (originally by The Band) and they took it up another notch with their original tunes thereafter. We liked their 33 1/3 bar blues so much we used at as the soundtrack to this funky timelapse film of the night they performed.

Can I get a “hell yeah”? [For more info: Blood Red Mountain Band on MySpace]

————————————————————————————————————————–

6. The Guilty Folk

The Guilty Folk write and perform ribald, raucous and rude little tunes that are eminently sing-along-able. Damn them. They have no right being this catchy and funny. Or that naughty. Aidan and Sarah actually reconnected as friends at one of the very first brownbread mixtapes, so we feel partially responsible for the ensuing magic and mirth. Not so much for the naughtiness. That’s mostly Aidan’s doing we reckon. They performed this cracking rendition of the very funny “Hate Sex” to a deliriously giddy crowd and it really shows on the recording. (They also did a brilliant collaboration with EleventyFour on the night called Happy) They are one of the most popular acts we’ve booked at the brownbread mixtape and they recently reciprocated their love for the audience at our christmas party by performing a new song called AWLF (Audience We’d Like to F*ck). We all look forward to a recording that! If you know what we mean. [For more info: The Guilty Folk on Facebook and their funny Cleverly Titled Blog]

————————————————————————————————————————–

7. Leanne Harte

Leanne has been writing and performing songs for several years and that shines through in her gentle easygoing stage manner. Her gorgeous, delicate rendition of “Wrote Away” at our July show was a stunning moment in which you could have heard a pin drop. Breathtaking stuff. Last year she also released a gorgeous acoustic album entitled “An Irish Girl in Paris” and it can be purchased on iTunes. After a spell away from the live scene, Leanne is back and absolutely on fire. She is an act of the highest quality and not to be missed.  [For more info: www.leanneharte.com]

————————————————————————————————————————–

8. EleventyFour

EleventyFour could be described as a quirky and engaging songstress, but that wouldn’t do her nearly enough justice. She is one of our very favourite performers at the brownbread mixtape (she performed at our very first show ever, back in the day!) and she writes songs that are filled with equal parts of humour and humanity. This recording of “The Friend Song” at our Imagine Festival slot captures her at her charming and melodic best. EleventyFour also created brownbread mixtape history this year by writing a song about a former raffle prize winner, the now legendary Jeff Nelson, and the song has become a firm favourite of ours. JEFF NELSON, JEFF NELSON, JEFF NELSON…

2011 (TwentyEleventy) promises much for EleventyFour , with an upcoming EP release amongst other things, so we look forward to seeing her back onstage with us again! Seek her out and support her live shows. She is awesomer than awesome. [For more info: EleventyFour’s Blog]

————————————————————————————————————————–

9. James Guilmartin

Jimmy is a top drawer singer-songwriter whose songs have a sweet familiarity to them, yet also seem cut from a different cloth. This performance of ‘Gypsy Love Song’ is langorous and lush, ably assisted by our very own Enda Roche on harmonies, percussives and ‘mouth-trumpet’. He also performed a cool cover of Al Green’s classic “Lets Stay Together” on the night and the good-natured audience participation is testament to the brilliant atmosphere he generated in the room! A top performer whose recent debut album “Intor Into Exile” is well worth picking up. [For more info: James Guilmartin on MySpace]

————————————————————————————————————————–

10. Bill Coleman

Bill Coleman put out a remarkable album this year called “You Cant Buy Back Your Life” (click here to see the astonishing artistic endeavour he went through to physically put it together ) and it was filled with his trademark songs of hope, melancholy and heart-thumping euphoria. Seeing Bill live is another beast entirely, but no less exciting. Working with loop pedals and an acoustic guitar, he builds vocal soundscapes that draw you in and grab you tightly. This recording of “I Want You To Know” closed out his set with us in April and it brought the house down. Bill is touring his album in 2011 and you will not want to miss him if he shows up in your neck of the woods. And by the way, pick up a copy of the album, it is a unique physical piece of art in a world of uniformly anonymous downloads. [For more info: www.bcoleman.com]

————————————————————————————————————————–

11. Fiach

It is quite possible that Fiach is the hardest working man in showbusiness. It is certainly true that Fiach is a savage songwriter and has buckets of charisma on stage. This year he released his eagerly awaited debut album “So I” which won him massive plaudits. He can also number legendary Waterford songwriter Gilbert O’Sullivan as a fan too. This performance from our “Things That Are Cool” themed night, showcases Fiach’s trademark impish humorous onstage charm alongside his considerable songwriting skills. Fiach tours regularly and is deserving of your support. His album is available now on iTunes. Go on. Get it. [For more info: www.fiach net]

————————————————————————————————————————–

12. Rory Faithfield

Rory is originally from Australia but has called Ireland his home for some time now. His most recent album “Songs for Sooner” is a stunner and can be picked up from his official website and the usual online outlets. Rory arrived on the brwnbread mixtape stage armed with an acoustic guitar, a loop pedal and a healthy punk rock ethos. This video of his performance is pieced together from a series of timelapsed webcam recordings of the show and Rory’s atmospheric song “Into The World” lends a perfect soundtrack to the images. Enjoy! [For more info: www.faithfield.com]

————————————————————————————————————————–

13. The Secret Gospel Choir

The Secret Gospel Choir are one of those cool, exciting brownbread mixtape stories. They had formed only shortly beforehand through a shared love of choral singing in a well known Dublin choir. Their performance at our “Secrets” themed show ended up being one of the true highlights of the year and it seems hard to believe that this was their first time ever onstage together. In fact, they were so brand new that their name was made up on the spot by Kalle as they had yet to christen themselves. This performance of the Billy Ocean classic “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car” has bundles of joy, quirkiness and gorgeous harmonies. It’s hardly any wonder that they have already been snapped up to sing for other fantastic musicians. We love the secret choir. And that’s not a secret.

————————————————————————————————————————–

14. Wayne Brennan

Wayne is a phenomenal guitar player and a hypnotic presence onstage. He recently released a wonderful album of songs entitled “In My Hands” which can be purchased on iTunes and the usual outlets. This performance of his instrumental piece “Peace in Your Mind” is a briliant showcase of his wizardry on the Spanish guitar and an electrified audience duly responded with roars of appreciation. (Earlier in the night he had performed a brilliant cover of Spanish Caravan by The Doors ) Wayne will be touring around Ireland in early 2011 so go out and catch him live if you can. It is an unforgettable experience. [For more info: www.waynebrennan.com]

————————————————————————————————————————–

15. Miss Paula Flynn

Paula Flynn writes and performs gorgeous, heartfelt songs. Many of you will recognise her as the voice of the cover version of Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” from the Ballygowan ad, or indeed as the other half of Jinx Lennon’s live show in recent years. But Paula is a gifted and arresting solo songwiter in her own right these days. This recording of “Little Miss Forkhill” (ably assisted by Greg McAteer on guitar) is a sweet, meditative look back at her formative years in Forkhill , Co. Antrim. She was kind enough to proclaim that the brownbread mixtape is “the best session in Ireland” and we think she is pretty damn amazing herself! [For more info: www.misspaulaflynn.com]

————————————————————————————————————————–

Special shout-out:

Rook and the Ravens

Rook and the Ravens are from Manchester and have a solid fanbase of followers here in Ireland, which means we have the privilege of seeing one of the very best acts from the UK several times a year in Dublin. The lads are one of the most popular acts we have ever had at the brownbread mixtape. They sing gorgeous three-part harmonies, layered with trebly guitars, that would make Crosby, Stills and Nash weep. Kalle and Enda were asked to MC their single launch night at Crawdaddy and it was one of the most raucous, fun nights of the year. And the single sold pretty well too! Do not dare miss them the next time they roll into town. They are the real deal. [For more info: www.ravensmusic.com]

————————————————————————————————————————–

And that was pretty much that as far as the music goes. We throughly enjoyed every minute of it and we hope that you did too. Check out our YouTube channel for loads of other brilliant performances from this year and last year as well.  And please share this page or the individual YouTube links with others if you dig them.

Go out there and support live music when you can. This golden age of music depends on your support!

brownbread mixtape #9 review — cooler than cool

This month’s brownbread mixtape theme was “Things that are cool” and it did not disappoint! It was a night filled with raucous roars of laughter and boundless waves of joy. All of it endlessly cool of course.

As always, the coolness kicked off with a rambling, happy, singalong song from Kalle and Enda (who was decked out in the coolest 80s threads imaginable) who powered through a brownbread rendition of the Kool & the Gang classic “Celebration”. What, if anything, could be cooler?

The evening then took off in earnest. Our first act of the night was the gifted singer and songwriter Fiach. Having recently completed a support slot to the legendary Ray Davies of The Kinks (and he can list Gilbert O’Sullivan as a fan), we were proud to have him with us to perform some of his songs at the brownbread mixtape.

Fiach began his set with a cheeky grin and launched into a little list of things that are cool (that he had compiled for the night that was in it) which led into his opening Gypsy song. His energy was infectious and his charisma shone through in a brilliant performance. It was no wonder that his recently released album “So I” was a big seller at the interval. Keep an eye on him, he’s going to be massive, but he did promise to go to Weight Watchers if it gets out of hand.

Next up, it was time for a brand new bespoke poem by our resident MC Kalle on the topic of “Things That Are Cool”. In many ways it was a lengthy rhyming list of everything that Kalle holds dear aesthetically and pop culturally. Which is basically a cool excuse for a funny poem. The audience was asked to holler, whoop and get rowdy if they heard something that resonated with them. And they surely did, although Kalle was personally surprised that Rilke got a louder roar than Wilco…

The time was then upon us to invite our brilliant resident brownbread players (Gus McDonagh, Sean McDonagh, Eva Bartley) to the stage. What began as a quirky, humorous interlude between acts and performances, has rapidly become one of the most popular parts of the brownbread mixtape gig. And tonight the brownbread players were in rare form once again!

This month’s comedic offering was a series of hilarious live radio commercials written by Kalle specifically for the theme of the evening. The products and services on offer treaded a fine line between impossibly cool and unbearably uncool. What was not in question was their funniness.

Our final act of side A was the very funny man they call Trevor Browne. Bringing together his twin weapons of the guitar and mind, he broke our funny bones into little pieces with his comedic musings.

Trevor took the opportunity to debut some of his poetry, as well as singing some of his funniest songs (even producing a really well-received brown(e)bread remix of “Freaky” for the occasion). He is a terrifically funny comedian who has an interesting mix of subtle and wacky material. You really have to see him perform. No seriously, you really do.

Side A was closed out with a healthy debate on what songs were cool, which songs were terribly uncool and what songs merit full-on air guitar. See for yourself.

Side B began with our monthly raffle, this time in aid of the fantastic work being done with homeless people by Depaul Ireland. Keep an eye out for Depaul Ireland at this year’s Oxegen and Electric Picnic festivals and take the time find out more about the great work that they do. As well as the “cool” t-shirt and ultra rare brownbread mixtape CD on offer in the raffle, the top prize was in fact a photograph of an original piece of artwork by a homeless artist who worked with Depaul Ireland last year. The raffle was a roaring success and raised an impressive €226.76 which will go towards providing necessary services in Dublin.

We then launched into the audience anecdotes on the topic of “coolness”. Stories of friends dressed as kangaroos, Ireland’s Eurovision victories, disgusting habits and sexual relations with Tiger Woods all made for a rowdy but memorable series of stories. So thank you all for contributing!

Our first act of Side B was the ever-charming Erin Fornoff (all the way from Asheville, North Carolina) who performed the classically cool Shel Silverstein poem “The Perfect High”

On a night of many cool things, Erin’s performance of “The Perfect High” was up there with the coolest. A wacky, oddball poem that took us on a mad journey peppered with magic moments. We hope to have Erin back soon to perform some her own poetic work.

It was then time again, to call on our inimitable brownbread players for our second cool commercial break. Another batch of odd, esoteric, cool and quirky products and services were given the brownbread treatment. Judging by the roars and shouts, some of these characters may have to get sketches of their own…

As microphones were shifted and readjusted, Kalle gave the audience a taste of his foulmouthed poem “Cinematic Sex” which talked about cool things such as sex and pornography in a rhyming structure that the literary greats would be proud of!

It was then time for our final act, the absolutely hysterical sketch comedy trio Foil, Arms & Hog. The lads have a wonderful device to close out sketches where they smash a cymbal to signal the end, but part of you doesn’t want the sketch to ever end. Don’t bang that gong!

The lads elicited wave after wave of laughter with their zany comedy sketches, but the biggest laughs were reserved for their brand new thematically “cool” sketch about iPhone apps. That brought the house down. Foil, Arms & Hog are headed over to the Edinburgh festival this summer and upon their return, expect them to be packing out Vicar Street and beyond. Catch them now while you can!

And so all things must come to an end. The evening drew to a close with the now traditional singing of the alternative Irish national anthem “My Blood Is Boiling for Ireland”. With everyone standing, hands on heart, in full voice roaring the immortal words of “Ireland, Ireland, Ireland f#*king Ireland” the curtain fell on yet another insanely cool, fun brownbread mixtape.

We had an absolute blast. We hope that you did too. Check out our myspace soon for audio of the night. Check in regularly with our YouTube channel for new videos. Become our fan on Facebook. “Things That Are Cool” – May 26th 2010

the brownbread mixtape is a fantastic FREE monthly gig. each gig has a theme. we invite poets, musicians, comedians and performers. they do a performance related to the theme. we all have loads of fun. simple as that.

the brownbread mixtape #9 is on Wednesday, May 26th at 8.30pm, upstairs in the iconic Stag’s Head pub. the theme for this month’s brownbread mixtape is “Things That Are Cool”

please join us, as we have a truly incredible line up of performers, who you would normally have to pay big piles of cash to see, but for one night only, they come together and perform for art’s sake. for free. for you.

resident MC Kalle Ryan will be in place again to deliver some laugh out loud interludes and get a reaction by holding up his homemade applause sign. resident sound man Enda Roche will also be in the corner fiddling with his knobs.

this month’s lineup is confirmed and includes the following amazing roster of performers:

MUSIC :

Fiach |

Fiach Moriarty is a 27 year old Dubliner, well respected and loved for his beautiful songwriting, exceptional voice and fantastic guitar playing. Fiach has, until now, been one the Irish music scene’s best kept secrets but with the recent release of his debut album “So I” he has been catapulted into the hearts of music lovers the length and breadth of the country. Described in Hot Press as a “supreme performer’’, he has shared the stage with the cream of Irish artists such as Damien Dempsey, Kila, Finbar Furey, Sinéad O’Connor, Damien Rice, BellX1 and Mary Black. In June of last year Fiach performed and represented Ireland at the annual Celtic Languages Contest ‘Nós Úr’ in Inverness singing an Irish version of his song ‘So I’ and came 1st in the jury vote. Come on Ireland! the brownbread mixtape is truly delighted to welcome Fiach to perform with us fresh from his support slot to the legendary Ray Davies of The Kinks. You can all say you saw him way back when upstairs in The Stag’s Head…

‘So I is a debut album of depth and courage, guile and wit’ – Irish Times

Garry O’Brien |

Garry hails from County Dublin and taught himself how to play guitar at the beginning of his teens and hasn’t put the instrument down since. Captured by the lure of Irish traditional music at a young age, Garry jammed regularly with family and friends to develop his uniquely diverse playing style fusing the sounds of trad, gospel and folk. His songs are honest, passionate and, above all, truthful. Garry is as comfortable singing in English as he is in his native tongue of Irish, with endearingly original vocal melodies layered on top of waves of harmonically interesting guitar lines. the brownbread mixtape are extra happy to have him onboard. Get ready for some serious acoustic guitar wizardry!

COMEDY:

Foil, Arms and Hog |

Foil, Arms and Hog are a sketch comedy trio that herald the end of each sketch with the banging of a gong- so the audience know when to laugh…. The group is comprised of three Dublin based actors/comedians, Sean Finegan, Sean Flanagan and Conor Mc Kenna. Formed in Dublin at University the group have enjoyed a meteoric rise on the Irish comedy circuit. Foil, Arms and Hog brought their debut show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2009 to ‘Just the Tonic @ The Caves’ venue, where they were picked to perform at ‘Mervin Strutters Pick of the Fringe’ and ‘Best of the Fest 2009’ shows. The lads have been performing regularly since their return, headlining Dublin’s best loved comedy nights such as ‘The Comedy Cellar’ and even Vicar Street, alongside Tommy Tiernan, David O’ Doherty and Jarlath Regan. the brownbread mixtape has been wooing Foil, Arms & Hog to perform for some time. We are over the moon to finally welcome them to the fold. Let the gutbusting laughter commence.

Trevor Browne |

Trevor first picked up a guitar when he was 2 years old but dropped it immediately as it he was too small to carry it. 22 years later he picked it up again and magic happened. Witness this magic. Witness Trevor Browne; singer-songwriter, sociologist. Greatness now carries a guitar. the brownbread mixtape is grateful to welcome such hilarious greatness.
