The Brownbread Mixtape Won Electric Picnic!

A stunning weekend at Electric Picnic, filled with an ocean of pure emotion, crescendo’d on Sunday for us with one of our greatest ever shows. Kalle and Enda kicked off proceedings with a rowdy, ramshackle rendition of “Put ’em under pressure” which saw the packed Word tent belting out a rousing chorus of “Olé, Olé, Olé, Olé…”. The show then quickly kicked off with a  stunning set ofheartfelt poetry by Erin Fornoff, who wowed the crowd with her moving and masterful poems. The roars and howls of appreciation echoed long after each piece.

Up next was our excellent resident sketch troupe “The Brownbread Players” who tackled the topic of Irish music festivals by reenacting Amanda Brunker’s painful festival performance verbatim, along with the actual YouTube comments directed at her. They also performed their classic selection of fake radio ads and closed out their set with the now legendary Werner Herzog sketch.

The Brownbread Players were in truly rare form and the crowd audibly sighed when the sketches drew to a close. The show then moved into yet another gear as Pearse McGloughlin took to the stage and delighted the now-heaving tent with his lyrical, melodic compositions. Clear highlights being the entire room singing “For the birds, the birds, the birds…” and closing out his set with a stunning rendition of “Ag Ól Ag Ól Ag An Garbhóg” with Enda Reilly and Fia Rua. You could have heard a pin drop as the room was held captivated from start to finish.

And in closing, the entire room stood to attention as the alternative Irish national anthem, “My Blood is Boiling for Ireland”, was chanted with gusto till the sides of the tent shook. A stunning close to a truly spectacular weekend.

It was great to see so many familiar faces in the audience and extremely exciting to gain so many new fans too. Huge thanks to Mindfield and the inimitable Marty Mulligan for giving us the opportunity to play at Electric Picnic. We will be back next year with more magic. Until then, stay tuned to us here and on Facebook for more exciting festival appearances and shows.

The Brownbread Mixtape at Electric Picnic 2011 (Sunday Sept 4th- The Word Stage – Mindfield)

the brownbread mixtape will be putting on a special festival themed show in the Mindfield area of the Electric Picnic this Sunday! The Word tent, curated and MCd by the inimitable Marty Mulligan, is one of the most interesting and eclectic places to spend time at the entire festival, so we are thrilled. Please spread the word and join us at 3.45pm on Sunday, Sept 4th. As usual we will present our classic madcap, raucous fun show with our resident MC and host Kalle Ryan at the helm, ably assisted by multi instru-mental-ist Enda Roche.

Here is a funny short animated film that Kalle made about the event. Check it out!

We have the following stunning lineup of acts specially selected for the occasion:

Pearse McGloughlin

Pearse hails originally from Sligo and in 2009 he released his debut album “Busy Whisper” to huge critical acclaim. Busy Whisper made many ‘Best Albums of 2009’ lists (No. 13 on Nialler 9, No. 6 on Phantom 105.2 and No.7 on Swear I’m Not Paul Blog) while the video for ‘Ways to Kill a Werewolf’ (Dir. Kevin McGloughlin) won an IMTV Award in the Best Male Video category. Pearse has performed at the most recent Hard Working Class Heroes Festival and released a well-received EP entitled “Twine” earlier this year. This year has also seen him tour in Ireland, Spain and France, while also finding the time to record a batch of new material for his forthcoming second album. Prepare yourself for a songwriter and musician at the height of his considerable powers.

Erin Fornoff

Erin hails from Asheville in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina and currently lives in a cabin in the wilds of Wicklow. After writing a bit of poetry in high school and a single poem in college she decided she liked performing more than printing and moved into spoken word. Most recently she has performed her remarkable poetry at The Glor Sessions at the International, Speakeasy Cabaret in Greystones, Mindfield Festival 2011 and The Flat Lake Festival as well as other locations in the US. She has a unique poetic voice, an American accent, and performs with real passion. Get ready for melancholy and majesty.

The Brownbread Players

One of the most enjoyable parts of the monthly brownbread mixtape show are the original sketches written and performed by our very own Brownbread Players sketch troupe (The Brownbread Players on Facebook). The troupe is made up of professional actors Gus McDonagh, Eva Bartley and Sean McDonagh,  as well as our own Kalle Ryan . All of the sketches are performed in the style of a live radio comedy show (akin to the classic Goon Show), complete with bloopers, giggles and audience interaction. They are consistently hilarious and are often the most popular element of our show. They are absurd, silly, satirical and a super-rapid-deadly-buzz!

We really look forward to seeing you there. Please spread the word to anyone you know who is going to the Electric Picnic. It is going to be a brilliant show!

Mindfield Review + Brilliant Cartoons and Illustrations of the Slam Poets

What a gorgeous sunny Bank Holiday weekend here in Dublin. Hope you all enjoyed the sweet weather. We had an absolutely wonderful weekend and one of the true highlights was the brownbread mixtape showcase on Friday evening at the Mindfield Festival in Dublin.

“Kalle Ryan – 7 Deadly Facts” (Apr 29th 2011)
Artist: Colm Mac Athlaoich

The south end of leafy Merrion Square had been magically transformed into a mini Electric Picnic and on Friday night, our very own wordsmith Kalle Ryan took to the stage with Erin Fornoff to represent the poetic prowess of the brownbread mixtape at The Word at Mindfield.

“Erin Fornoff – Stephen James Smith” (Apr 29th 2011)
Artist: Colm Mac Athlaoich

Chief rhyme-slinger and MC, Marty Mulligan, was on hand to guide proceedings in his trademark poetic, rhythmic, shamanic way. In addition to our own night being showcased, The Glor Sessions and TongueBox, two of the other giants of the spoken word/poetry scene in Dublin were there too. The energy in the room was warm and engaged (with the notable exception of the gargled bowsy who had to be chaperoned out) and the audience were effusive and enthusiastic in their praise afterwards.

“Marty Mulligan – Kalle Ryan – Erin Fornoff”
Artist:  Philip Barrett

In addition to the wonderful words being bandied about, there were several really gifted artists, illustrators and cartoonists attending the event who dashed down artistic depictions of people and concepts as they happened. As you can see from the selections here, they are witty, wicked, weird and wonderful. (You can see an entire Flickr feed of the work they did at the festival here)

“Kalle Ryan – 7 Deadly Facts” (Apr 29th 2011)
Artist: Paddy Lynch

It was such a cool and innovative idea to bring these artists on board to document the event and the results were truly excellent. Super little slices of the people and soundbites of a weekend dedicated to ideas and words.

“Kalle Ryan – Do’s and Don’ts” (Apr 29th 2011)
Artist: Colm Mac Athlaoich

Maximum respect to all of the artists, performers & speakers and to the Mindfield organisers for staging such an intelligent, interesting event. A really great showcase of the thinkers and thought-provoking people amongst us.  Long may it continue!
